Residential school

A boarding school, run by a government or church, where indigenous children were sent to be separated from their culture.

Also called: Indian residential school, boarding school, Indian boarding school

In Canada, the United States and elsewhere, indigenous children were taken from their families, often by force, and placed in boarding schools. They were punished for speaking their languages. Many suffered neglect and abuse, and many died. The effects are still felt across generations.
