'First Nations' came into use in Canada in the 1970s and 1980s to replace 'Indian', which many find offensive, though 'Indian' remains in some laws. First Nations are many distinct peoples with their own languages and governments. Together with Inuit and Métis they are the three groups of Indigenous peoples recognised in Canada's constitution.
