Endangered language
A language at risk of falling silent because children are no longer learning it at home.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
A language becomes endangered when parents stop passing it on, usually under pressure from schools, jobs and prejudice that favour a dominant language. UNESCO and other bodies estimate that a large share of the world's roughly 7,000 languages are at risk. Most endangered languages are spoken by indigenous peoples.
