The absorbing of a minority people into the majority culture, so that their own language and customs fade or are suppressed.

Assimilation can happen gradually through contact, but many governments have forced it. Policies have included banning languages and ceremonies, removing children from their families, and breaking up shared land. UNDRIP states that indigenous peoples have the right not to be subjected to forced assimilation.
