Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group

An official Indian category for Scheduled Tribe communities judged most at risk, which receive extra support.

Also called: PVTG, PVTGs

The Government of India identifies these groups using signs such as a small or shrinking population, low literacy and a livelihood based on foraging or simple farming. There are 75 such groups across 18 states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The category was renamed in 2006, replacing an older label that used the word 'primitive'.
