Forest Rights Act
A 2006 Indian law that recognises the rights of tribal and other forest-dwelling people to the forest land they live on and use.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
For over a century, forest communities in India were treated as trespassers on government forest. The act recognises individual rights to land already farmed and community rights to use, manage and protect forests. Claims are started and checked by the gram sabha, the village assembly.
