A collective name, meaning 'original inhabitants', used by and for many tribal peoples of India.

The word comes from Hindi and Sanskrit roots meaning 'first' and 'dweller'. It came into wide use in the twentieth century as a term of shared identity, especially in central and eastern India. It is not a legal term: the constitution uses 'Scheduled Tribes'. Many peoples of north-east India prefer 'tribal' or their own names.
