Uncontacted peoples

Peoples who have no peaceful, ongoing contact with the wider society around them.

Also called: uncontacted tribes, isolated peoples

Uncontacted does not mean unaware. These peoples know outsiders exist, and many are descended from survivors of earlier violence or disease who chose to withdraw. Researchers and campaign groups count well over 100 such groups, most of them in the Amazon. They are highly vulnerable to common illnesses to which they have no immunity.
