A person or society that lives mainly by hunting, fishing and collecting wild plants, not by farming or herding.

All humans lived this way until farming began roughly 12,000 years ago. A small number of societies still get much of their food from wild sources today. They are modern peoples who have chosen or been able to keep this way of life, and most also trade, farm a little or work for wages.
