Subsistence

Producing food and goods mainly for one's own family and community to use, not to sell for profit.

Also called: subsistence economy, subsistence living

A subsistence economy meets needs directly: people hunt, fish, herd or grow what they eat. It does not mean poverty or bare survival. Many subsistence societies also share food widely and take part in the cash economy for some needs.
