Treaty
A formal agreement between nations. Many states signed treaties with indigenous nations over land, peace and rights.

Treaties with indigenous nations usually exchanged land or peace for promises: reserved lands, payments, and continued rights to hunt and fish. Many were signed under pressure and later broken. They remain legally important, and courts still enforce treaty rights.
