Métis

A distinct indigenous people of Canada who trace their origins to both First Nations and European ancestors.

Also called: Metis, Métis Nation

The Métis emerged as a people in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mainly from unions between First Nations women and French or Scottish fur traders. They developed their own culture, communities and language, Michif. Being Métis means belonging to that historic people, not simply having mixed ancestry.
