Repatriation

The return of human remains, sacred objects and cultural treasures from museums and collections to the peoples they came from.

Also called: return of ancestral remains, restitution

During the colonial period, museums and collectors took many thousands of ancestral remains and sacred objects, often without consent. Communities ask for them back so that ancestors can be reburied and ceremonies continued. A growing number of museums and governments now have return policies.
