Ancestor veneration

Honouring dead family members, in the belief that they still care about and influence the living.

Also called: ancestor worship, honouring the ancestors

In many societies the dead remain part of the family. People make offerings, tend graves, ask for guidance and name children after ancestors. 'Veneration' is preferred to 'worship' because ancestors are usually honoured as elders, not treated as gods.
