Taking designs, symbols, dress or knowledge from a people without permission, credit or understanding, often for profit.

The concern is greatest when a powerful group takes from a people who have been colonised or discriminated against, or when sacred items are used as costume or decoration. It differs from respectful exchange, where the community agrees, is credited and shares in any benefit. Where the line falls is debated.
