Gram sabha

In India, the assembly of all adult residents of a village, which holds decision-making power under several laws.

Also called: village assembly

The gram sabha is the whole village meeting together, not an elected committee. In tribal areas, laws such as PESA and the Forest Rights Act give it authority over community resources and a voice on projects that affect the village. It is the closest thing in Indian law to community consent.
