Intangible cultural heritage
Living traditions that are passed on, such as songs, dances, crafts, rituals, festivals and knowledge of nature.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
Unlike buildings or objects, intangible heritage exists only when people practise it and teach it. UNESCO adopted a convention to safeguard it in 2003 and keeps international lists of examples. The aim is to keep traditions alive in their communities, not to freeze them.
