Aboriginal peoples are the first peoples of mainland Australia and Tasmania, made up of hundreds of distinct nations and language groups. Torres Strait Islanders come from the islands between Queensland and Papua New Guinea and have their own distinct cultures. The full phrase is used because the two groups are different. Shortened forms such as 'Aborigines' are considered outdated.
