Moiety

One of two halves into which a whole society is divided, each person belonging to one half from birth.

The word comes from the French for 'half'. In a society with moieties, everyone and often everything in nature belongs to one of two sides. A person usually must marry someone from the other half, and the two halves carry out ceremonies for each other.
