A tribe is a community held together mainly by family ties, shared customs and a shared name, not by a state. The word has no single agreed definition, and scholars use it less than they once did. It is also a legal term in some countries, such as India and the United States. Some peoples use the word proudly, while others find it loaded and prefer 'people', 'nation' or their own name.
