A group of people who see themselves as sharing ancestry, history, language or culture, whatever their size or political status.

Also called: ethnicity, ethnic community

An ethnic group is defined by a shared sense of belonging, usually based on common origins, language, religion or customs. It is the broadest of these words. Every tribe is an ethnic group, but most ethnic groups are not called tribes. Ethnic groups can number a few hundred people or many millions.
