Treaty of Waitangi

The 1840 agreement between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, regarded as New Zealand's founding document.

Also called: Te Tiriti o Waitangi

The treaty was first signed on 6 February 1840 at Waitangi. It exists in an English text and a Māori text, and the two differ in meaning, especially over who holds authority. Disputes about what was agreed continue. The Waitangi Tribunal, set up in 1975, hears claims that the Crown has breached the treaty.
