Iwi
A Māori tribe or nation: a large group of people descended from a common ancestor.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
Iwi are the largest social units in Māori society. Each is made up of several hapū, or sub-tribes, and has its own territory, history and leaders. The word also means 'bone' in the Māori language. Today iwi organisations manage land, fisheries and settlements with the government.
