Alaska Native peoples belong to many distinct cultures and language groups. Their legal position differs from that of tribes elsewhere in the United States. Under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, land and money went to regional and village corporations owned by Alaska Native shareholders, not to reservations.
