The indigenous people of the far north of Norway, Sweden and Finland and the Kola Peninsula of Russia.

Also called: Saami, Sami

The Sámi homeland is called Sápmi. Estimates of the Sámi population vary, commonly between 80,000 and 100,000. They speak several related Sámi languages. Reindeer herding is the best-known Sámi livelihood, though only a minority herd today, and fishing, farming and modern jobs are also common. The old name 'Lapp' is considered offensive.
