Homeland

The land a people regard as their place of origin and belonging, whether or not a state recognises it as theirs.

Also called: ancestral land, traditional territory

A homeland is more than a place to live. It holds a people's history, burial grounds, sacred places and means of living. A homeland can cross modern borders, and a people may be a minority within it.
