ILO Convention 169
A binding international treaty of 1989 on the rights of indigenous and tribal peoples, for countries that ratify it.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
The convention was adopted by the International Labour Organization, a United Nations agency. Countries that ratify it must consult indigenous and tribal peoples, respect their customs and recognise their land rights. Only about two dozen countries have ratified it, most of them in Latin America.
