Ethnology

The comparative study of different peoples and cultures, looking for patterns, similarities and differences.

Also called: comparative anthropology

Where ethnography describes one society in depth, ethnology compares many. It asks questions such as why kinship systems differ or how farming spread. In some countries 'ethnology' is simply the usual word for cultural anthropology.
