Census

An official count of a country's population. How it asks about identity shapes how many indigenous people are recorded.

Also called: population count

Census figures decide funding, reserved seats and political weight, so being counted matters. Some censuses let people state their own identity, some use official lists, and some do not ask about ethnicity at all. This is why population figures for indigenous peoples are estimates and vary between sources.
