Native American
A member of any of the indigenous peoples of the United States, especially of the lower 48 states.

'Native American' and 'American Indian' are both in common use, and people differ on which they prefer. 'Indian' remains in law and in the names of many tribes and agencies. Most people prefer to be identified by their specific nation, such as Hopi or Lakota.
