The taking of large areas of land from the communities who use it, often without fair consent or compensation.

Land grabs may be legal on paper yet ignore customary ownership, because community land often has no written title. Buyers include governments, companies and investors seeking farmland, timber, minerals or land for conservation. In India the loss of tribal land to outsiders is usually called land alienation.
