Dowry

Money, goods or property that the bride's family gives to the bride, the groom or his family at marriage.

Dowry moves in the opposite direction to bridewealth. In some places it is a daughter's share of the family wealth. In others it has become a demand by the groom's family, which can lead to pressure and abuse. Many tribal societies traditionally practise bridewealth, not dowry.
