Doctrine of discovery
An old legal idea that European Christian powers gained rights over lands they 'discovered', whoever already lived there.

The idea grew out of papal decrees of the fifteenth century and was used by European states to justify colonisation. In 1823 the United States Supreme Court made it part of American law in the case Johnson v. M'Intosh. Indigenous peoples have long campaigned for it to be renounced.
