Initiation

A ceremony that marks a person's move from one stage of life to another, most often from childhood to adulthood.

Also called: rite of passage, coming-of-age ceremony

Initiation usually involves a time apart from ordinary life, teaching by elders, a test or ordeal, and a public return with a new status. Afterwards the person has adult rights and duties. Much of what is taught is private to the community and not meant to be shared with outsiders.
