Exonym
A name given to a people, language or place by outsiders, different from the name the people use themselves.
Presented by ClearTrust Free for classrooms, newsrooms and the curious.
An exonym comes from outside the group. Many were coined by neighbours, traders or colonial officials, and some began as insults. Others are neutral and widely accepted. When an exonym is seen as offensive, peoples often ask for their own name to be used instead.
